What​‍​‌‍​‍‌​‍​‌‍​‍‌ is AOI?

Automated Optical Inspection or AOI employs very high resolution cameras and software to process images to automatically verify if the components are correctly placed and soldered on the PCB during the SMT assembly process.

What​‍​‌‍​‍‌​‍​‌‍​‍‌ is AOI? 

AOI machines are able to accurately identify and inspect a wide range of components such as coils, transistors, rectangular chip components, resistors, capacitors, diodes, triodes integrated circuits, connectors, as well as irregularly shaped components. Besides, AOI machines are very handy in spotting the following defects:

Q1: What defects can your AOI spot?

KING FIELD : Our AOI can spot major defects such as missing components, misalignment, wrong parts, solder joint problems and PCB defects.

Q2: Is AOI inspection replacing PCB functional testing?

KING FIELD : Definitely not. AOI is complement of electrical test and functional test. So, all of them are necessary and every one of them cannot be excluded.

Q3: Which SMT production stages are involved by your AOI machine in the quality control process?

KING FIELD : AOI can detect insufficient solder and excessive solder defects in the solder paste printing process; AOI may also be used to detect the absence of the components, component misalignment, and incorrect components during the component placement process; AOI is able to detect cold solder joints, false solder joints, and abnormal solder joints faults, besides other problems, at the soldering stage. So, virtually it covers the whole process for quality risk potential.

Q4: What are the main advantages of your 3D AOI machine over a conventional 2D one?

KING FIELD : Our 3D AOI machine can very accurately measure solder paste thickness and component height, and it is better at detecting precision components and complex structures.

Q5: Can your AOI completely get rid of missing defects?

KING FIELD : Absolutely not. Complete removal is impossible here. AOI could help greatly in defect detection but at the same time it can not totally eliminate defect omissions. Several test methods are ​‍​‌‍​‍‌​‍​‌‍​‍‌required.
